A triple to remember

This doesn’t happen too often, not for Bayern München and even less so for us. However, on the more fortunate side, we are happy to announce that a second paper of Felix Preuß’ dissertation has been published in Communications Biology. In this very exciting study, Felix achieved to record form a pair of synaptically coupled inhibitory interneurons to show that a single presynaptic neuron’s output can effectively reduce the firing rate of the postsynaptic target cell. This lends further experimental support to the power of VIP but also PV neurons to control inhibitory target cells, a motif also called disinhibition. The second paper, I’d like to announce is a matter of heart. With a lot of enthusiasm by many people (though not all), we were working our way into the primate cortex during the last six years. In a large cooperative project, mainly with the group of Julio Martinez-Trujillo at Western University (Ontario, Canada), we managed to record from a large number of marmoset neurons being located in the prefrontal cortex or the primary visual cortex. Due to an intelligent embedding of our electrophysiological and morphological data into the UMAP space of ground truth transcriptomics in mouse and man, we could draw some conclusions as to cell type specialization across hierarchically different cortical areas.
