Research focus
My scientific interest lies in the functional logic of the wiring blueprint of the cortical column. This basic module of the cortex cerebri (also called macrocolumn) appears to have enough “computational power” to be able to carry out important functions in sensory stimulus processing. However, there is increasing evidence that the functionality of the cortex cannot be understood with the sole concept of the cortical column and the “canonical circuit” integrated into it, as more and more non-canonical circuit motifs are being found.
The approximately 9,000 excitatory and inhibitory neurons in a barrel-associated column in the mouse are of very different morphological types. Both the excitatory pyramidal cells and the inhibitory (GABAergic) interneurons can be divided into further subtypes, which each have typical input-output patterns depending on their membership in the different cortical layers. A key distinguishing feature for GABAergic interneurons is the subcellular target cell specificity, which roughly divides them into 2 classes for (i) output (spiking) control and (ii) input (dendritic integration) control: the first includes the parvalbumin-expressing axo-axonic (or Chandelier) cells and basket cells as “perisomatic inhibitors”, the second involves (amongst others) the somatostatin-expressing Martinotti cells, the VIP-expressing bipolar interneurons and the NDNF-expressing neuroglial cells as “dendritic inhibitors”.
